St John’s Priory chapel

The College of Matrons provides accommodation across two sites: The Close in Salisbury and St John’s Priory in Wilton. Whilst each community has its own character, both share the same commitment to providing secure, affordable homes within a supportive and friendly environment.

Residents are free to enjoy as much privacy or companionship as they wish. Many maintain active connections with the wider community whilst also enjoying the reassurance of being part of a close-knit neighbourhood.

At St John’s Priory in Wilton, residents regularly come together for social activities throughout the year, including coffee mornings, tea parties, seasonal celebrations and occasional shared meals. The site also benefits from its own chapel, which remains an important part of community life for many residents.

At The Close in Salisbury, community life is often shaped more informally by residents themselves. Neighbours meet in the gardens, enjoy coffee together, celebrate birthdays and gather for seasonal events, including Christmas celebrations. The College also occasionally organises outings and opportunities for residents to spend time together.

The gardens play an important role at both sites. Residents are welcome to enjoy the shared outdoor spaces, and many take pleasure in gardening, helping to maintain flower beds and cultivate their own areas where appropriate.

Located in the heart of Salisbury Cathedral Close and within the historic community of Wilton, residents benefit from easy access to local shops, places of worship, community groups and cultural activities, enabling them to remain active and connected whilst enjoying the security of almshouse living.

Whilst every resident’s experience is different, the College aims to provide an environment where people can enjoy independence, dignity, friendship and a sense of belonging.
